Berry Passage

“Berry Passage”, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 60 cm/23.6 x 23.6 in., 2020, is part of my Forest Series. During an autumn walk in the forests surrounding the Villers Abbey (close to Waterloo, Belgium), I was making my way down a narrow and slightly steep path when I looked up and was stunned at the view. It was not an expansive view, one which allowed me to see far into the distance, but rather my view of what lay ahead was suddenly interrupted. I saw, a few meters in front of me, the sunlight coming through the trees just up ahead. I was in awe of the lush green leaves of a tree that hung over the trail and the bright red berries on a bush to my right. Small bright leaves were scattered on the trail. It was a special and cozy sight. I knew this was a scene to paint!
